Ørsted Secures 80MW Solar Power Deal with Bloomberg in Texas

Danish renewables developer Ørsted has just inked a 15-year deal to supply 80 megawatts of solar power to media company Bloomberg in the US. The power will come from the Mockingbird Solar Centre, a massive 471-megawatt project being built near Paris, Texas. This solar venture is Ørsted's biggest in the United States.

Bloomberg is among four companies buying electricity from the Mockingbird Solar Centre, alongside Covestro, a polymer manufacturer, and Royal DSM, a Dutch multinational corporation. Bloomberg recently hopped on board the RE100 initiative, a global effort where companies commit to getting 100% of their power from renewables by 2025. Dave Wildman, the global head of facilities and sustainability at Bloomberg, sees the Ørsted agreement as a key step toward meeting their RE100 goal.

The renewable energy flowing from the Mockingbird Solar Centre is expected to cover all of Bloomberg's electricity needs in the US and a whopping 80% of its global power consumption.

Back in 2022, Bloomberg locked in 192,533 megawatt-hours from 11 projects, making up over half of their total purchased electricity.

This recent deal isn't Ørsted's first rodeo in the US renewables scene. They previously signed a power purchase agreement with Meta, a social media and data giant, and the Salt River Project, a US utility. This deal involves the Eleven Mile Solar Centre in Arizona, currently in construction. When finished, Ørsted predicts a hefty 300-megawatt capacity and a 4-hour battery storage system with a 300-megawatt output, totaling 1,200 megawatt-hours.
